Gatwick Airport is the second largest international airport in London and the second most crowded (after total passenger traffic) airport in the UK (after Heathrow). Gatwick is the leading airport in Europe and has one of the world's busiest tracks with 55 aircraft movements per hour. Its two terminals (north and south) cover an area of 98,000 m2 and 160,000 m2 respectively. In 2013, 35.4 million passengers crossed the airport. From 1978 to 2008, many flights to and from the United States were operated at Gatwick Airport, due to restrictions on the use of Heathrow Airport, implemented in the Bermuda II agreement between the United Kingdom and the United States of America. US Airways, the last US air carrier to remain in Gatwick, completed its flight operations on March 30, 2013. This leaves Gatwick without a US airline for the first time in over 35 years. The airport is an air base for Aer Lingus, British Airways (BA), EasyJet, Monarch Airlines, Norwegian Air Shuttle and Virgin Atlantic as well as charter operators such as Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson Airways.
The London and Brighton railways opened on September 21, 1841 and was near Gatwick Manor. In 1890, the descendants of the owners sold the land to the newly-established Gatwick Race Course. The new owners have opened a racetrack the following year, adjacent to the London-Brighton railroad, and a dedicated station for horse speakers. Here races were hosted, including Grand National, during World War I in 1916, 1917 and 1918. During the 1920s, the land adjacent to the hippodrome (at the Hunts Green Farm along Tinsley Green Lane) was used as a aerodrome; it was authorized in August 1930 as Gatwick Aerodrome after ownership change. Aircraft Company Redwing bought the aerodrome in 1932, and in 1933 the Aviation Ministry approved commercial flights from Gatwick, and the aerodrome was sold for £ 13,500 to Morris Jackaman. Jackaman formed a new company at the airport, Limited Airports, in 1934. Airways Hillman became the first Gatwick commercial airline operator, starting a regular service from the airport to Belfast and Paris. In 1935, a new airline, British Airways, was formed by the merger of Airways Hillman, United Airways and Spartan Airways. The new carrier, who shortened his name to British Airways, became the main operator on Gatwick. In 1936 the aerodrome was temporarily closed for renovation, which included the Beehive, the world's first circular building. In September, Gatwick Station was opened, and was served by two trains per hour on the Victoria - Brighton line. On September 30, Green Tinsley Station opened at 0.85 km south of Gatwick Station. The first flight left the Beehive terminal on 17 May 1936 in Paris. The flight ticket cost £ 4.5 to Victoria Station. The airport was officially reopened on June 6, 1936. The Beehive was designed by Frank Hoar and incorporated several new features, including a subway station at the Tinsley Green railway station that allowed passengers to travel from Victoria Station to the aircraft without going out. After the official reopening of the airport, Tinsley Green Station was renamed "Gatwick Airport".
In 1937, because of the need for longer landing lanes, British Airways moved to Croydon Airport. Gatwick returned to private flight and was used by the Royal Air Force (RAF). The airport was redeemed by the Air Ministry in September 1939, becoming a base for the RAF, during the Second World War (primarily for repair and maintenance). The races at Gatwick ended in 1940. Although the airport was officially decommissioned in 1946, the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation continued to use it as a civil airport (initially for a six-month trial period). Most commercial airfares were cargo flights. In 1950, in spite of local opposition, the Cabinet chose Gatwick as an alternative to Heathrow, then British Airways (BEA) began its flights to the Channel Islands.
In May 1950, the first charter flight left for the Mediterranean Sea on the Corsica Island (with a refueling stop at Nice). In July 1952, the British government confirmed that the airport would be refurbished, primarily for Heathrow hijacked planes in bad weather. That year, BEA established a base at Gatwick for helicopter operations. The airport was closed between 1956-1958 for renovation, with an investment of £ 7.8 million. On May 27, 1958, Gatwick (which was rebuilt) reopened as Gatwick Airport Station, and Green Tinsley Station was shut down. Prior to the official opening, TransAir operated the first commercial air service from the new Gatwick on May 30, 1958.
Gatwick was the first airport in the world with a direct rail link and the first to combine a railroad and a terminal building into a single drive. It was also among the first airports with a closed terminal, which allowed passengers to go under the roof to the waiting areas next to the aircraft (with only a short walk outdoors). Another feature of the new Gatwick terminal was the modular design, which later allowed it to expand.
Between 1958 and 1959, Sudan Airways and BWIA West Indies Airways were among the overseas airlines on Gatwick. The service, between Khartoum and Gatwick via Cairo, Athens and Rome, was initially performed by AERIAN Vickers Viscount. Seven Seas Airlines, Capitol International, Airlines and Transocean Airlines and several South European and Scandinavian companies have been among the first overseas airport users.
Transportation and parking
Means of transport to the city.
Means of transport to the cityDifferent subway lines connect the city airport, but the fastest and easiest to use is Gatwick Express, which leaves Victoria Station. It runs between 3:30 or 4:30 and until 00:30. In the 5: 00-23: 35 interval, departures are every 15 minutes. A trip takes about 30 minutes and a 30-day ticket costs £ 13 and £ 24 round trip. The price may increase depending on the time you travel. You can find railway information and information offices in the arrival areas of both terminals. A train trip can take longer than other means of transport, but it is cheaper and cheaper. National Express is the only train service between Gatwick and Heathrow, with about 100 races a day.
A non-stop service from the airport to the city and vice versa makes frequent transfer, the ticket price starting at £ 2. Buses leave every 15 to 20 minutes throughout the day but also at night at both terminals. A journey takes an hour and five minutes. EasyBus offers daily services, except for Christmas, and can be used by all airport passengers.
Another way to get to town is to sue a car. This is a perfect option when you want to visit more London locations, or when traveling with your family. You will find numerous companies caring for cars at Gatwick Airport, and you can even negotiate the price for the whole time you spend in England. One of the important conditions for driving a car here is to be used to driving a car on the right hand side.
Parking.
Each terminal has a short-term parking with direct access through covered passages. Long-term staying is also possible in car parks near terminals; a free bus connects between terminals and car parks. Gatwick Airport has a limited number of parking spaces, plus related services and periodic offers. Thus, depending on the period or the length of the station, the cars can be parked for a tariff of approximately £30 / day. The higher the booking time, the higher the price can record discounts or promotions. In addition to parking, passengers can also benefit from accommodation in a package designed specifically for passengers who prefer to spend the night or a few hours at the airport. This ensures that you are in good time at the boarding gate.
Services
The airport has two terminals, North and South. Both have shops and restaurants in the public area and in the air operations area. All areas are accessible to disabled travellers. There are special children's rooms for change and feeding, as well as play areas and video games.
On May 31, 2008, Virgin Holidays opened a lounge, Gatwick's first leisure venue, to be used by Virgin Holidays, which offers flights to Orlando, Las Vegas and the Caribbean. On April 9, 2009, a new plan for access to the lounge, No.1 Traveller, was opened in South Terminal. Gatwick has a conference and business center and several hotels. The airport has a Catholic church with free access to the chapel.
